Learn How to Send Group Texts on Your Phone
Understanding Group Text Messaging Basics
Group texting is a way to send the same message to multiple people at once using your phone. Instead of typing out a message and sending it individually to five, ten, or even fifty contacts, you can create a group and send one message that reaches everyone simultaneously. Most modern smartphones have built-in group messaging features that work through standard text messaging (SMS) or internet-based messaging services.

Group texts function differently depending on your phone type and the service you use. On iPhones, group messages typically use iMessage when all participants have Apple devices, which offers features like read receipts and the ability to see when someone is typing. On Android devices, group texts use standard SMS or messaging apps that support group conversations. Understanding these differences matters because it affects how conversations flow and what features you can use.
The core concept behind group texting is efficiency. Instead of sending "Hey, the meeting is at 3 PM" to individual people, you can send it once to a group containing your coworkers, friends, or family members. Everyone receives the message at the same time, and replies go to the entire group so conversations develop naturally. This creates a shared communication thread rather than multiple separate conversations.
There are practical reasons people use group texts regularly. Parents coordinate schedules with their kids' activities. Sports teams organize practice times and game locations. Work teams confirm meeting details. Friend groups plan events. In each case, group messaging saves time and reduces confusion because everyone sees the same information and responses.
Practical Takeaway: Group texting lets you communicate with multiple people through one message thread. Different phones and services offer different features, but the basic function remains the same—send once, reach everyone in the group.
How to Create a Group Text on iPhone
Creating a group text on an iPhone involves using the Messages app, which comes pre-installed on all Apple devices. Open the Messages app and look for the pencil-and-paper icon or a button labeled "Compose" or "New Message." This icon typically appears in the top-right corner of your screen. Tap it to start a new message thread.

When you tap the compose button, you'll see a field that says "To:" at the top. This is where you add recipients. You can type the names of contacts directly into this field, and your phone will suggest matching contacts from your address book. As you type each name, tap the contact when it appears in the dropdown list. You can add as many people as you want to the group. Some users create groups with just three or four people, while others add twenty or more depending on their needs.
After adding all participants, tap the message composition area—usually a text box that says "iMessage" or "Text Message"—and type your message. You can include text, emojis, photos, or videos just like a regular message. When you're ready to send, press the send button (usually a blue arrow or circle).
One important distinction on iPhones: if everyone in your group has an Apple device and iMessage is turned on, the group message uses Apple's iMessage service, shown by a blue send button. If even one person uses an Android phone or doesn't have iMessage enabled, the message sends as SMS (standard text message), shown by a green send button. This changes how the conversation works—green messages don't include typing indicators or read receipts.
For repeated groups you message often, you can create a contact group within your phone's settings. Go to Settings, then Contacts, and create a new group. Add your regular contacts to this group, then you can simply select the group name in the "To:" field when composing messages. This saves time if you regularly send messages to the same set of people.
Practical Takeaway: On iPhone, open Messages, tap Compose, type or select multiple contact names in the "To:" field, write your message, and send. For groups you use regularly, create a contact group in Settings to save time.
How to Create a Group Text on Android
Android phones use the default Messages app or other messaging applications to send group texts. Open your Messages app—this is usually called "Messages," "SMS," or sometimes "Google Messages" depending on your phone model and manufacturer. Look for a button to compose a new message. This is typically shown as a pencil icon, a "+" symbol, or a button labeled "New Message" at the bottom or top of your screen.

Tap the compose button to start a new message. You'll see a field labeled "To:" where you enter recipients. Unlike some systems, Android phones don't require you to create a formal group first—you simply add multiple recipients to a single message, and that automatically becomes a group conversation. Type the first contact's name or phone number, and your phone will suggest matches from your contacts. Tap the contact to add them. Repeat this process for each person you want to include in the group.
Once you've added all recipients, move to the message composition field and type your message. Include any text, images, videos, or emojis you want to share. Android's stock Messages app supports most media types. When your message is ready, tap the send button to deliver it to the entire group.
Different Android phones may use different messaging apps. Some phones come with Samsung Messages, others with Google Messages, and some manufacturers use their own versions. The basic process remains similar across these apps—compose new message, add multiple recipients, type content, send. However, features vary. Google Messages offers some advanced features like message scheduling and chat features for supported contacts. Samsung Messages has its own interface and features. Check your phone's documentation or app settings to learn about your specific messaging app's capabilities.
To make group texting easier with people you contact frequently, add them to a contact group. In your phone's Contacts app, create a new group and add members to it. Some Android phones allow you to select this group directly when composing messages, similar to iPhones. This functionality depends on your phone model and the messaging app you use.
Practical Takeaway: On Android, open Messages, tap Compose or "+," type multiple contact names or numbers in the "To:" field, write your message, and send. Different Android phones may have slightly different interfaces, but the core process is the same.
Managing Active Group Conversations
Once a group text conversation is active, managing it involves understanding how replies work and how to stay organized. When someone replies to a group message, their response goes to everyone in the thread, not just to you. This is different from a regular text conversation where only two people see the exchange. In a group, all participants see all replies, which keeps everyone informed but can also lead to many notifications if the group is active.

Most phones allow you to customize notifications for group chats. On iPhones, swipe left on a group conversation in the Messages app and look for options to mute notifications or adjust alert settings. You can usually turn off sound alerts while still receiving message notifications, or you can mute the conversation entirely for a set period. On Android, open the conversation, tap the three-line menu or settings icon, and look for notification settings. You can silence notifications while still keeping the conversation in your message list.
If a group text becomes cluttered or you want to step back, you have options. On iPhones with iMessage groups, you can tap "Details" at the top of the conversation and select "Leave this Conversation." This removes you from the group, though you'll continue to see previous messages. Regular SMS group texts cannot be left the same way—you'll keep receiving messages unless the group administrator removes you or the group naturally ends.
Android users can typically long-press a conversation and delete it, though this removes it from your message list rather than leaving the group. To actually leave an Android group, you usually need to open the conversation, find a menu option like "Leave group" or "Remove myself," if available. The option depends on your specific messaging app.
When participating in group conversations, remember that everything you write is visible to everyone. Groups work best when participants stay focused on the topic and avoid sending excessively personal or irrelevant messages. For large groups, establishing norms early—like whether off-topic jokes are welcome or if the group is strictly business—helps keep conversations productive.
Practical Takeaway: Group conversations notify everyone of all replies. You can customize notifications to mute alerts, and you can leave or delete group conversations if needed. Keeping messages relevant to the group's purpose maintains good communication.
